William Calvin Bassitt, 78, a resident of the Village of Lakewood , Illinois died August 10, 2013 at his home.
Bill was born June 2, 1935 in St. Albans, West Virginia. He was a member of Washington Masonic Lodge 58 (AF & AM) in St. Albans, West Virginia, The Grand Lodge of West Virginia and was a 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., USA located in the Valley of Charleston, West Virginia.
Bill was a Class of 1953 graduate of St. Albans High School in St. Albans, WV. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from West Virginia Institute of Technology, a Master of Science in Education and Psychology from Western Illinois University and a Doctorate in Counselor Education and Special Education from West Virginia University. Other universities attended include: West Virginia State University, Marshall University, Southern Illinois University and Northern Illinois University.
Bill retired in 1994 from Township High School District #211 in Palatine , Illinois He entered District #211 in 1972 and served as Director of Student Services at Schaumburg High School in Schaumburg , Illinois until 1980 when he moved to the administration center as Assistant Superintendent for Instructional and Student Services.
Prior to joining Township High School District #211, Bill’s professional experiences included the following positions: Instructor of Psychology at Wenatchee Valley College in Wenatchee, Washington; Student Teaching Supervisor in Wenatchee, Washington for the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington; Consultant to the Washington State Counselor Certification program through Eastern Washington State University in Spokane, Washington; Counseling Practicum Supervisor and Instructor for West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia; Research Consultant for the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Director of Guidance at Nashville Community High School in Nashville, Illinois.
Other community involvements include: teaching parenting classes in Wenatchee, Washington for Central Washington State University, Ellensburg, Washington; teaching curriculum courses for Northern Illinois University in DeKalb , Illinois serving as Chair, Board of Trustees for Humana Hospital in Hoffman Estates , Illinois and serving on committees for the United Way and the American Cancer Society.
Bill received the “Those Who Excel” award in 1993 from the Illinois State Board of Education through the Illinois Outstanding School Administrator program.
Bill is survived by his three children, daughter, Teri Beth Lasky and husband Joseph of St. John, Indiana, son, Jeff Bassitt and wife Terri of Bartlett, Illinois and daughter, Margaret Louise Modzelewski and husband John of Carol Stream , Illinois his grandchildren, Laurette Cannaley and husband Chris of Noblesville, Indiana, Sgt. Samuel Lasky, USMC and wife Gia, Steven Lasky, Lance Corporal Andrew Lasky USMC, Charles Lasky and Helena Lasky of St. John, Indiana, Meagan Bassitt of Hoffman Estates, Illinois and Matthew Bassitt of Rockford, Illinois Kristina Marshall of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Kevin Modzelewski, Jefferson Modzelewski, and Kayli Modzelewski of Carol Stream , Illinois great-granddaughters, Bryana Travieso of Hoffman Estates , Illinois and Ryland Bassitt of Rockford , Illinois and a great-grandson, and Ben Cannaley of Noblesville, Indiana; his brother, George Bassitt and wife Nell Ruth of Hamilton, Ohio; and his sister, Helen Margaret Bassitt of St. Albans, West Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Bassitt.
Masonic Service Saturday August 17, 2013 2 pm/ Meet at Washington Lodge 58 at 1 PM
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, 409 Sixth Avenue, St. Albans. Burial will follow with Masonic rites will be at Teays Hill Cemetery in St. Albans, West Virginia.
Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
