William Allen “Bill” Shelton, age 88, of Poca, WV, entered eternal peace and rest with the Lord Jesus Christ on February 1, 2014. Bill retired from Union Carbide in 1985, following 33 years as a Lubrication Engineer.
Bill graduated from Nicholas Co. High School in 1943, immediately enlisting in the Navy to serve his country during World War II. After honorable discharge, he graduated from West Virginia Institute of Technology.
Bill was a member of Nitro Lodge 170 AF&AM, Scottish Rite, and Beni Kedem Shrine. He was a musician, clogger, and square dancer, having belonged to several community bands and dance groups in the Kanawha Valley.
Celebrating Bill’s life are: his wife of 66 years, Virginia “Jenny” Shelton, son William Allen Shelton II (Karen) of Poca, WV, son John Edward “Ed” Shelton (Cindy) of Summersville, WV, and daughter Deborah “Debbie”Shelton Dean (Curtis) of Poca, WV.
Bill was affectionately known as “Papaw” to: Willam Allen “Allen” Shelton III (Cynthia and great granddaughter Allecyn), Nicholas Shelton, John Shelton (Amanda and great granddaughter Ava), Whitney Shelton Deaton (Joshua and great grandson Benjamin and great granddaughter Brynlee), Mark Dean (Kelly), and Aaron Dean. He is also survived by sister Agnes Davis and brother John W. Shelton.
Bill was preceded in death by parents, John C. and Georgia E. Shelton, sisters, Katie Neil, Vina Shawver, and Betty McHenry.
The family would like to thank River Park and St. Mary’s Hospital staffs for their care, support, and comfort.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, WV with Pastor Keith Cobb officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 am to 11:00 am prior to the service. Interment will follow at Walker Memorial Park in Summersville, WV, graveside service at 2:15 pm. Arrangements are in care of Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, WV.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be directed to Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals, c/o Beni Kedem Shrine, 100 Quarrier St., Charleston, WV 25301.
