Death of Walter W. Schoolcraft

Walter W. Schoolcraft, 68, of Cairo, W.Va., departed this life Sept. 9, 2011, at the Camden Clark Medical Center, Memorial Campus.

Walter was born Sept. 9, 1943 in Windsor, N.C., a son of the late Norman and Thelma (Shields) Schoolcraft. He was a graduate of the former Cairo High School with the class of 1961 and was retired after many years of service from the former Union Carbide Plant of Friendly, W.Va. Walter has been a member of the Cairo Masonic Lodge 114 A.F. & A.M. since 1969. He belonged to the Scottish Rite of Parkersburg where he achieved the rank of 32nd degree mason. He was appointed and served as the District Deputy Grand Master of the 11th Masonic District and was appointed as grand representative to the grand lodge of the Orient of Brazil. He was also a member of the Cairo Chapter 39 Order of the Eastern Star and served as the former mayor of Cairo.

He is survived by his loving wife, Helen (Martin) Schoolcraft; daughters, Jennifer Cottrill, Cairo, W.Va. and Jeannette Linger of Williamstown; brother, David Schoolcraft of Weirton, W.Va.; and grandchildren, Kory Cottrill and Ivy Linger.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Elaine Schoolcraft.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Raiguel Funeral Home, Cairo. Burial will follow in the Cairo Masonic Cemetery, where full masonic rites will be conducted by the Cairo Masonic Lodge 114 A.F. & A.M. Friends may call the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday.
