Robert L. “Bob” Smith, 86, of South Charleston passed away January 9, 2012, at Hubbard Hospice House West.

Born April 18, 1925, in Landisburg, Fayette County, he was the son of the late Dewey W. and Ida Bostic Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Ruth A. Smith; brothers, Eugene, John Morris and Gordon Smith; and one sister, Helen McKinney.

Surviving are his daughter, Deborah Westmoreland; one grandson, William J. Westmoreland; and several nephews and their wives.

Bob was retired from Union Carbide, South Charleston with 32 years of service, and was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Charleston. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran who fought in the Battles of Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. He also served with the 625 Ammo Company and the 108th Infantry Division during World War II.
Bob was a 50-year member of Charleston Masonic Lodge #153; Order of the Eastern Star #45; and Scottish Rite Bodies. He was also a 50-year member of Beni Kedem Shrine Center; and the Royal Order of Jesters Court #111 of Charleston. He was a Life Member of the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, January 12, at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev William K. Berry officiating. Entombment with Masonic Graveside Rites provided by Charleston Lodge #153 will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 11, at the funeral home.
