Death of Richard Neil “Dick” Swisher, Past Grand Master of Masons in West Virginia

SWISHER, Richard Neil “Dick,” age 78, of Moundsville passed away Thursday, December 6, 2012, at Wheeling Hospital Medical Park following a 12-year illness.

He was born in Clarksburg, WV, on January 9, 1934, the son of the late Edwin W. Swisher and Wilma Gillispie Swisher Shea, and step-son of the late John Paul Shea.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict as a cryptographer in the Signal Corps.

In 1962, he became a District Sales manager for Nationwide Insurance and served in this capacity in four different cities in Ohio and West Virginia. In 1983, he returned to his original agency in Weston, WV, where he retired in 1999.

At Boston, MA, in 1975, he received the Chartered Life Underwriters (CLU) Certification from the American College of Life Underwriters at Bryn Mawr, PA.

Most Worshipful Brother Swisher served as the Grand Master of Masons in West Virginia in 1996-1997. He began his distinguished Masonic career in 1959 in Jackson Lodge #35, Ancient, Free, and Accepted Masons in Good Hope, WV, and quickly rose to the Sublime degree of Master Mason on April 4, 1959.

Mr. Swisher was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Moundsville. He was a loyal Mountaineer fan and a staunch Republican. His wit and intelligence were admired by those who knew him. He took an active interest in family genealogy and the Jane Lew High School Alumni Association.

In addition to his parents and step-father, he was preceded in death by his beloved granddad Wirt Swisher; and two sisters, Judith Kelly and Diana Sue Paxton.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sharon Mills Swisher; and three children, Becky Swisher of Weston, Brenda Crow and her husband Alan of Moundsville, Fred Swisher and his wife Vi of Clarksburg. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren, Isaac Neil Crow of Pittsburgh, PA, and Sadie Renee Crow a student at WVU; a sister, Barbara McCarty of Jane Lew; a brother, John Swisher and his wife Carroll of Charleston, SC; an uncle, Lee Gillispie of Cleveland, OH; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and two spoiled cats, Sunshine and Tom Tom.

Family will receive friends Saturday from 6-9 p.m. at Grisell Funeral Home and Crematory, 400 Jefferson Ave., Moundsville, where a scripture service will be held at 8:30 p.m. with Rev. Greg Blair.

Friends will also be received Monday from 5-8 p.m. at Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home, 730 N. Main Ave., Weston, WV, where funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 11 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Clifford N. West officiating.

Interment in Friendship Cemetery, Jane Lew, with Jackson Lodge #35 conducting Masonic graveside services.
