Larry Paul Wakefield, 69 of Fairmont passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at the Tygart Center at Fairmont Campus following a long courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Indiana Pennsylvania on June 5, 1943 a son of the late Mack Wakefield and Genieve (Kelly) Wakefield.
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Margaret Ann (King) Wakefield.
Larry graduated from high school in Indiana, Pennsylvania. He served in the United States Army from 1962 – 1965. He was employed as an operator for 27 years for Schlumberger Well Services. He had served as a Paramedic with the Marion County Rescue Squad. Larry had also served as a volunteer transport driver for the Louis A Johnson VA Medical Center.
He was a member of the Central Christian Church, a social member of the VFW Post 629 of Fairmont, Fairmont Elks Lodge #294 of Fairmont, West Virginia Travelers and the A .F.& A. M. Masonic Lodge #9 of Fairmont and Scottish Rite of Clarksburg and the Upper Monongahela Valley Osiris Shrine Club. Larry was a Honorary Kentucky Colonial. He was a member of Lifelong Learners at Fairmont State University. Larry Wakefield led a full active life, he enjoyed his many friends and enjoyed cooking and baking for his friends and family.
Larry was a bonafide Rolling Stones “Super Fan” , seeing concerts all over the Country for the past 30 years. He was the Founder of “Mick on the River.” He was a great WVU Mountaineer fan.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, James Wakefield and his wife Barbara of Indiana, Pennsylvania; a brother-in-law, Earl Bartlebaugh; a niece, Carole Bartlebaugh and a nephew, Larry Bartlebaugh all of Pennsylvania; his mother-in-law, Margaret King of Fairmont.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Janet Bartlebaugh and his father-in-law, Hubert King.
Mr. Wakefield’s family would like to thank Dr. Azar and staff, the staff and nurses of 3-B at Fairmont General Hospital and the staff of 400 Hall at the Tygart Center for their loving care of Larry during his illness.
Friends may call at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street on Tuesday from 1pm to 8pm and on Wednesday 10am to 11am. The funeral service will be held at 11am of Wednesday at the funeral home with Rev. Johnna Mansuetto officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Grave side Masonic Rites will be conducted by Fairmont Lodge #9. Fairmont Elks Lodge will hold a memorial service at 7pm on Tuesday at the Funeral Home.
