FAIRMONT — John Dale “Pappy John” Shaffer, 84, of Fairmont, passed away Sunday (Nov. 7, 2010) at his residence.  He was born in Fairmont Jan. 30, 1926, son of the late Percy Shaffer and Arminta (Sine) Shaffer.  John served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a cadet. He retired from the railroad where he was a conductor for 35 years. After his retirement he and his wife operated Shaffer’s Garage until his health gave out. He loved the Quiet Dell Community. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working on the family farm, the sound of a good beagle dog running a rabbit and watching the wildlife at the family farm that he fed daily. After a hard day’s work, he enjoyed a fire in the wood stove and a good baseball game on TV and bluegrass music. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 9 Orient Chapter of Fairmont for more than 50 years, and served as past Master.  Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mollie Harris Shaffer; a son, Dale W. “Johnny” Shaffer and wife Cathy of Fairmont; four grandchildren, Natalie Michael of Mannington, John Richard Shaffer and his companion Kim Mullens, Lori Miller, and Kelly Henderson and husband Tim, all of Fairmont; and seven great-grandchildren, Caitlin Hardesty, Jena Micheals, Hayden and Haylee Miller, Jacob Henderson, and Addie and Lil Johnny Shaffer.  In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Shaffer.  The world lost a great man today, but heaven gained one. He will be missed by all that knew him. Goodbye, Pap John.  Family will receive friends at Domico Funeral Home, Domico Chapel, 414 Gaston Ave., Fairmont, from 1 to 8 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with Pastor Orville Wright officiating. Masonic Lodge No. 9, Fairmont, will conduct a Masonic service, and the Taylor County Honor Guard will conduct a veteran service at the West Virginia National Cemetery.
