Jerry Thomas Bess, 78, of Charleston, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014, at CAMC General Hospital.
He was born in Kokomo, Ind., on Jan. 14, 1935. He was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda “Anna” Bess; daughter, Elaine Thomas; brother, Leonard Wysong Jr.; and sister, Cheryl Wysong.
During his military career, he served in Korea and Vietnam and retired from the United States Marine Corps as an MSgt. He was also previously employed with the West Virginia Public Service Commission.
Jerry was a member of Liberty Christian Church, MATCA, Salina Lodge No. 27 AF&AM, Scottish Rite, American Legion, Marine Corps Association and Moose Lodge.
He was a graduate of West Virginia State College.
He is survived by his son, Charles R. Bess of Pittsburgh, Pa.; sisters, Delores Evans and Patty Wysong, both of Goshen, Ind.; and grandchildren, Allen and Jeremy Bess, and Edward Zachary Thomas of Hurricane.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 27, at Liberty Christian Church with Pastor Ira Keller and Mr. Frank Keller officiating. The burial will follow the service with military graveside services in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.
Family and friends will gather for the visitation on Wednesday, March 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Liberty Christian Church, 61 Fruitwood Lane, Charleston, WV 25306.
