James E. Deem, 85, of Harrisville, passed away July 10, 2011 at Camden Clark Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Campus, Parkersburg.
He was born Jan. 31, 1926 in Harrisville, the son of the late F.S. “Dick” and Lila M. Matheny Deem.
Jim went into the army his senior year at Harrisville High School. He served with the 100th Infantry Division in the Rhineland, and Central European Campaigns and was a German Prisoner of War. After his discharge, he worked in the oil and gas business until 1970 when he became a member of the Parkersburg Local 565 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union. He worked construction until his retirement in 1991. He was a 50 year member and past master of Harrisville Lodge 98 AF & AM, and Scottish Rite of Parkersburg. He was also a member of The Harrisville Baptist Church.
He is survived by his brother, J. Frank Deem (Becky) of Vienna; a son, Gene Deem (Barbara ) of Pennsboro; daughters, Lila Hart of St. Marys and Spring Deem of Yuma, Ariz.; step-daughter, Kitty Ray (Robbie) of Harrisville; grandchildren, John Deem (Emily), James Deem (Tina), Jacob Deem (Andrea), Niles Hart (Kelli Ervin), Stacy Moody (Josh), Angel Webber (Raymond), and Gary Denning II; and eleven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Deem; his first wife, Helen Hogue Mahaney; second wife Avalene Reeves Pool; and son-in-law, Rick Hart.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Harrisville IOOF Cemetery with the Reverend Larry Hooper officiating. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Raiguel Funeral Home.
