Frederick “Fred” Becker Hess, 96, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at City Hospital.

Born March 4, 1915 in Berkeley County, he was the son of the late Edward Lee and Mary Becker Hess.

Fred attended local schools and was a graduate of Martinsburg High School in 1934; attended Shepherd College and graduated from WV University.

He was an owner and manager of Ramsey – Hess Furniture Company; a lifetime member of Christ Reformed Church; and a veteran of the U. S. Army.

Mr. Hess served on the Board of Directors of Green Hill Cemetery for many years, was a member of Equality Lodge #44, A.F. and A.M., Osiris Temple Mystic Order of Shrine, Eastern Panhandle Shrine Club, and Lebanon Chapter of Royal Arch Masons. Throughout his lifetime he was a member of many civic and charitable organizations.

Fred was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-three years, L. Elizabeth Appleby Hess.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Thomas Hartshorn officiating. Masonic graveside services will be held at Green Hill Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
