SHINNSTON — Fred William “Bill” Thompson, 73, of Lumberport, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 12, 2013, following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Kirby, PA, on May 15, 1939, a son of the late Paul and Marie Fox Thompson.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Carol Lee Flowers Thompson.
Also surviving are four children, Beth Harrison and husband Frank, Colts Neck, NJ, Michael Thompson, Clarksburg, Chad Thompson and fiancée Amber Shepherd, Richmond, VA, and Tresa Lane and husband Mark, Shinnston; three brothers, Dan Thompson, Connor Thompson and wife Janie, and Charles Thompson and wife Terri, all of Clarksburg; two sisters, Mary Ann Folmar, Clarksburg, and Martha Brown, Canton, OH; three sisters-in-law, Margaret Hoard, Morgantown, Edna Swiger and husband Michael, Clarksburg, Shelbia Dixon, Parsons; six grandchildren, Jonathan Harrison, Steven Harrison, Daniel Harrison, Ashley Thompson, Zeke Lane, Trace Lane; and several nieces and nephews.
Bill graduated from Victory High School, Class of 1957, and he attended Potomac State College where played football. He retired from Wholesale Tire in Clarksburg in 2001 after 35 years of service. He served several terms on the Lumberport City Council and also served as mayor. He was a member of the Lumberport Baptist Church and St. John’s Masonic Lodge No. 24, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Adoniram 11 Chapter of York Rite, Valley of Clarksburg Commandery No. 13 Knights Templar, Nemesis Shriners, Central WV Shrine Club, Wilsonburg Lions Club, Wolf Summit Lodge IOOF, and the Adamston Lodge IOOF 263.
He had been a member of several car clubs: the Centipedes, The Shifters and the West Virginia Antique Car Club. Bill loved his 1937 Chrysler Royal that he had received for his 16th birthday and enjoyed showing it in local car shows. He also adored his dog, Jersey. He enjoyed golfing, as well as detailing cars. Bill will be greatly missed.
Per Bill’s wishes, cremation services were provided by the Hutson Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery with Pastors Chad Hutson and Homer Ham officiating.
