Esau Jackson “E.J.” Duty of Hamlin, born Nov. 14, 1942, went to be with the Lord on June 10, 2014. E.J. was the son of the late Ella Duty McBee and Cefus Duty.
E.J. is survived by his wife, Virginia Dare “Jenny” Duty; his two children, Christa Duty Adkins (James Eric Adkins) and Eric Franklin Duty (Summer McCallister Duty); one granddaughter, Alison Paige Adkins, who was Poppy’s girl; and two sisters, Anna Lucille Stowers Watterson and Rose Marie Plumley. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Paul Eugene Duty.
He was the beloved uncle and brother-in-law of many from the Browning and Duty family and a friend to all who met and knew him. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hamlin, where he served in many capacities, from teaching to always having a smile, a hug and encouraging words. He was a member of Hamlin Masonic Lodge No. 79. E.J. was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired from Clearon, formerly known as FMC and Olin, and was a former mayor and city councilman. He was currently working part time for Lincoln 911, where he had met and made new friends. He was an avid fisherman and had a smile and a laugh that will be greatly missed.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 13, at Koontz Funeral Home, Hamlin, with the Rev. Terry Sponaugle and Pastor David Burch officiating. Interment will follow at Lincoln Memorial Park, Hamlin, with military graveside rites by American Legion Post No. 111, Hamlin, and Masonic graveside rites by Masonic Lodge No. 79, Hamlin.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at Koontz Funeral Home, Hamlin
