Death of Dr. Alfred Bruce McCuskey

Dr. Alfred Bruce McCuskey, 91, of St. Albans, West Virginia, passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at his residence with his family by his side. Bruce was born December 29, 1922, in Middlebourne, West Virginia to the late Frank C. and Ethel Grace Waggoner McCuskey.

Bruce married his high school sweetheart Elizabeth “Betty” Arlene Chapman in 1942. Together, they were happily married for 71 years, and raised a family in St. Albans.

He was a graduate of Marshall University and University of Pittsburgh, culminating as a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1954. Bruce and Betty returned to West Virginia to establish his dental practice, settling in St. Albans. Throughout his 56 years of practicing dentistry he touched the lives of many, often giving his time and professional services to those in need.

Bruce was an active community leader, supporting countless efforts to strengthen the community. He devoted significant time and resources to support the athletic program at St. Albans High School. Bruce was particularly proud to construct, fit, donate and maintain custom dental appliances and safety guards for many athletes over the years. He also enjoyed involvement as a 50-year member of Washington Masonic Lodge # 58 A. F. & A. M., St. Albans and the Order of the Eastern Star #79, St. Albans.

Bruce served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was selected for and served as a distinguished member of the U.S. Military Police for the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, in Tokyo, Japan. Bruce was honorably discharged from service after earning numerous distinctions, including a Good Conduct Medal, an Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, a World War II Victory Medal, and a Bronze Star.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Dr. Frank Crim McCuskey, Jr., of Nampa, Idaho, Dr. C. Paul McCuskey of Fallon, Nevada, and son Alfred Bruce McCuskey, II, of St. Albans.

Bruce is survived by his loving wife Betty, 89, and sons, Paul G. McCuskey, Peter J. McCuskey and wife Janetta, and David A. McCuskey and wife Susan, all of St. Albans.

Bruce’s legacy continues through his grandchildren Sean L. McCuskey, Sheila L. McCuskey, Ryan W. McCuskey, Brenton A. McCuskey, Christopher P. McCuskey, Olivia S. McCuskey, Bruce C. McCuskey, Elizabeth J. McCuskey, and Colin D. McCuskey.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans with Rev. Mark Stauffer officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans with Masonic Graveside Rites conducted by the Washington Masonic Lodge # 58.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.

In his remembrance, the family suggests donations to the athletic program at St. Albans High School.
