Mr. Alfred C. Varner age 80 years a resident of 226 Silvester Drive Elkins, WV. departed this life early Tuesday morning, April 6th, 2010 at his residence. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.

Born February 12th 1930 at Durbin, WV, a son of the late Alfred Varner and Olga Jane Bowers and step son of the late A. Q. Young. On December 25th 1953 at Philippi he was united in marriage to the former Constance N. Phillips who survives at their home in Elkins.

In addition to his wife he is survived by on son Jeff C. Varner, one daughter Jennifer Lynne Gouer and husband Larry all of Elkins. Also surviving are two sisters, Virginia Parsons and husband Dale of Baltimore, MD and Louise Armstrong and husband Cecil “June” of Newport News, VA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Annie Powers and Carol Gordon.

Mr. Varner was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1949 and a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving four years in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the Elkins Masonic Lodge #108 AF&AM, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite, a member of Osiris Shrine Temple of Wheeling, the Osiris Arabian Shrine Band, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkins. Al also was a member of H.W. Daniels Post #29 American Legion and the VFW Post #3647. He had served on the Elkins City Council and the Randolph County Republican Executive Committee. He was instrumental in starting a program of placing flags on Elkins city streets on national holidays. He retired in 1989 as a supervisor after 38 years of service with the C&P Telephone Co. of West Virginia and Bell Atlantic..
