Around the Temple – April 20, 2012

Greetings from the River Cities. Sorry I’m running a little late this week. I was doing my civic duty to see how little I could manage to forward to Internal Revenue this year. I really didn’t have much luck. In addition to money, I also lost the better part of three night’s sleep.

(CORRECTION) Huntington Shrine Club will have its annual Eddie Osborn Memorial Babe Ruth Tournament on a date yet to be determined. All profit from the tournament will go to the Beni Kedem Transportation Fund or the Shrine hospitals. These teams are not all stars but the basic teams (for lack of a better term) with young men playing who might otherwise never play in a tournament. Come out and give them some support. (Donations will be appreciated at the gates.) Remember, most of the profit for the tournament comes from the sale of ads for the tournament program. If any of you know of personal or business ads we may obtain, please inform Noble Jack Childers.

One thing from Crescent Lodge. Brother Karl Hager is getting closer to having to doing the Second Degree Floor Lecture as more of their members return the Third Degree Catechism. I believe its sitting at 5 more returns.

Huntington Chapter #6 R.A.M. is having a festival on 21 April starting at 9:00 a.m. We will have coffee and doughnuts in the dining room about 8:00 a.m. We have had degree masters (to borrow a term from the Scottish Rite) working on the Past Masters’ degree and other members have been working on some of the parts of the Royal Arch. We will be glad to offer courtesy work, but ask that secretaries of other chapter send a letter verifying that candidates have been elected to receive the degrees. We will also be glad to receive petitions on the day of the work. If any of you would like to take part, give us a line so we may have parts assigned and make it easier to determine what parts to “scrounge.”

Before going dark for the summer, the Huntington Scottish Rite will have a ring ceremony for new members in the 31 March 2012 class. This ceremony will be open to the families and friends of Scottish Rite members, and we encourage them to attend. We believe the ceremony is quite impressive.

The Scottish Rite Club In the Valley Picnic will be June 9, 2012 at the WV Pumpkin Park In Milton. This is open to all interested brethren and Non Scottish Rite masons, We plan on eating at noon. We could use some help setting up on Friday the 8th at about 4 pm with tables and seats getting hog cooking. Then the morning of about 8 am getting all food and drinks ready. So please come out and join us we talk all night while the hog cooks!

Division 2 of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of West Virginia will have its annual Division Inspection on 9 June. This division has long had one of the better division inspections in the state. They nearly always have at least one candidate from each commandery and officers of each commandery take on significant parts of the work. Probably the worst problem they have is that each commandery has a considerable difference in floor space and it is sometimes difficult to work together as a team for the tactics. Difficult– yes. But they do a good job of overcoming the difficulty.

July 21, 2012 we have our second annual Jule Huffman 5 k run for the kids which will start at 8 am on Veterans Memorial Blvd. We will be starting at 7 am with set up and need volunteers with registration, water tables along the course and road guards at crossings. So please contact Al Rigsby, Mickey Martin or Rick Meade. This is for the childhood language clinic at Marshall. We will also need help with tear down, all goes well we will be done by 10 am.

On July 28, 2012 we will be having our benefit picnic at the 4 H Camp in Barboursville, time and cost TBD at a later time. This is once again for the Childhood Language at Marshall. So any interested brethren please contact Al Rigsby, Mickey Martin or Larry Bolling for information on how you can help out in our fund raisers. It would be greatly appreciated!

Officers, Coaches, and all interested Master Masons are invited to attend.

SICKNESS AND DISTRESS: Juanita Beckett, the mother of Brother Bill Smith of Hamlin, passed away last week from Stage 5 Kidney Failure.

Clodus Burdell Buck, 79, of Leon suffered a stroke on April 3, and passed away Monday, April 16, 2012, at Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, Huntington. He was a 1951 graduate of Point Pleasant High School, and a retiree of Kaiser Aluminum Corp. with 27 years of service. Burdell was a member of Kanawha Valley Lodge No. 36 A.F&.A.M. in Buffalo; Beni Kedem Temple; and Order of the Eastern Star. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages that memorial donations be made to Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, P.O. Box 464, Huntington, WV 25709. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo with Pastor Don Hussell officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 20, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo.

Brother Don Peterson is home from knee replacement surgery. He implies he has to take it easy for about two more weeks. That’s what the therapists tell him. I suspect Rose may be trying to speed that up.

In the words of Past Grand Commander Bob Caldwell, “When you’re among Masons, you’re among friends. Be among friends often.”

Father in Heaven,

Thank you for the gift of your Son to provide us a way to salvation. Please help us to express our appreciation for that gift as we go forth into the world, a world which seems not to want us to share your love with those who don’t know you. Still, let us remember your blessings that we may bless others as you have blessed us. Amen.

Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the men of old; seek what they sought. – Matuo Basho
